What is WID®-easy?
How does it work?
Developed by University College London in partnership with the Eve Appeal, the WID-easy test (referred to as "WID-qEC" in the literature) is used to more accurately triage peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women with abnormal uterine bleeding. Compared to transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS), the WID-easy test has been shown to reduce unnecessary follow-up procedures such as hysteroscopy by >90% without missing any cancers 1.
The test measures the methylation status of DNA regions of the GYPC and ZSCAN12 genes, which are known to be highly methylated in endometrial cancer. WID-easy is developed for high throughput analysis, enabling a rapid turnaround from sampling to receiving the result. A simple cervicovaginal swab is taken and sent to a designated UK laboratory, and an objective result is returned to the clinic after a few days.
The WID®-easy test can revolutionise the endometrial cancer pathway for patients and clinics.
Every year in the UK, 275,000 women experience abnormal uterine bleeding. ~95,000 will have a thickened endometrium ( ≥ 4mm) but less than 10,000 will have endometrial cancer 2. This can significantly delay urgent treatment for those who need it most, and leads to clinicians performing thousands of procedures on those who don’t need them.
Time to diagnosis for endometrial cancer is especially critical; it has the highest number of lives lost for any given period of delay to diagnosis compared with ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, stomach, testicular, and thyroid cancers 3.
